What’s the best way to ween my 19 month old off the bottle.

I have a 19 month old still using a bottle. The real issue is at night. He will only go back to sleep with a bottle. He’ll go to bed with out one, but screams in the night for one. Some nights he could have 2 or 3 bottles before morning. I believe this is also why I have such an issue getting him to sleep through the night. Thank you.

  1. Have you tried feeding him before bed? My son had the same problem and what we did was make sure he had a bottle before bed and after a few nights he stopped waking for one in the middle of the night. We have started this with my daughter (3 months) and she is now sleeping through the night.

Try and put him to sleep with a full stomach.

  2. You are gonna go through a few rough nights but you should be consistent and do just what the other persons advise was. Give the supper feeding and let it be. He is going with what he knows, if expects that bottle. A few nights without it, without you going in the room everytime… he will catch on. Good luck.

  3. Mine does the same occassionally and usually he’s just hungry so I give him animal crackers. I too make sure he’s well fed before going to bed but sometimes it’s unavoidable if he’s tired and just falls asleep.

  4. My 15 mo. old daughter has the same problem. I know she’s got a full tummy before bed, but she still wakes up 2 or 3 times a night and wants a bottle. I have slowly (an ounce a night) cut back how much milk she gets. Now she only gets 3 ounces when she wakes up. I read that when you keep giving them less that eventually they won’t think it’s worth it, but so far she still thinks that 3 oz. is worth crying for. I think I’ll have to go cold turkey and just have a few painful nights - If I can hack it. Good luck.

  5. I too have a 17month old daughter and my 4th child which I never had this problem before. She too will go to bed with a full tummy and bottle and still wakes up at least 1-2 times for another bottle, at 1st I thought it was teething, I have tried to let her cry, but there is no end to her cries! She disrupts the whole house! I guess after reading some of the comments, I will go with taking away the bottle at nap, then go from there and give less and less. I hope it works soon!

  6. I have a daughter who is now 3 years old who went through the exact same thing, I will give you advise from my experience from what I did- ween your child to sippy cups at night instead of a bottle start off with a soft spout sippy, after about two weeks or so once your child is liking the soft spout try out diffrent sippy cups….if a child wants milk at night they are gonna get it and that is the reality because we love our children and dont like to see them sad… the way I see it is that milk does a body good and its a great vitamin drink and builds strong bones, your child may grow up to be the type to drink milk before bed even when he is 24 years old and drinks milk with his pizza!…there is nothing wrong with milk just give it in different cups….my daughter is three and she has to have a glass of milk before turning to bed and im proud of her (I never took her sippy cup away…and now drinks a cup before bed) they wont drink from a sippy cup forever there is so many cool cups out there with starws and spider man these days they wont drink from sippy cups forever! its all in their own timing….:)
